Local Profile:  Cortes Island Wild Harvest!

By Andrea Block

Cortes Island Wild Harvest is proud to provide our community and beyond with sustainably caught wild salmon from the Salish Sea.  Our wild salmon are individually caught on a barbless hook and line, cleaned and dressed by hand and double-iced.  Gary then brings them fresh to a locally owned and operated cannery and smokehouse committed to top quality where they are expertly cured and packed by hand, never having been previously frozen.

Gary began fishing when he was twelve as a deckhand. Now Thea and Megan, his teenage daughters, have both fished as deckhands aboard his 38' wooden troller: the Stacey Rock.  The troll fishery Gary is part of is selective, with next to no incidental by catch. Gary also sells roe to fresh buyers and whenever possible brings home the guts for our garden.

Gary has always brought home fresh salmon to Manson's dock and when company prices continued to be poor, he decided to become independent of the companies, thus Cortes Island Wild Harvest was created.  CIWH is a chance for what is now a limited quota fishery to support boat upkeep, ice, wharfage, fuel, deckhands and his time.

The wild salmon troll fishery is in decline.  There are few left.  He is committed to a sustainable future for wild salmon and providing our community access to top quality wild salmon.

Cortes Wild Harvest Salmon is available at the Co-op.

Pallets for the taking!

The Co-op has a surplus of wooden pallets. If you're in need of one or two, come and get 'em!

How long have you been working at the Co-op?  I was sitting in Co-op meetings from the beginning with my son Solomon when he was 4 months old. That's about 8 years and 10 months, 13 days. Something like that.

What are your roles at the Co-op?
I'm on the Board. I order and manage the produce, receive local goods and fresh produce, and order from an array of companies for good quality products that are from  BC, raw, wildcrafted, or just plain special.

What does the Co-op mean to you?
So much...I love reclaiming the costs of buying food, connecting with growers and local businesses,  giving big juicy raspberries to corporate structure and mean bosses, commitment, service, good food for my kids, employment, hundreds of String Cheese posters on the walls, hand painted signs that knock you in the head, and feeling like a hundred hands are under me.

What is your favorite part of working at the Co-op?
Working in an environment that works hard towards positive growth for ourselves. Everyone here is not only committed to the business but to working together and that's a rare rare find.

What are your other interests or hobbies or work?
Yoga, raw food, love, friends, and once in a while...a leap of faith.

If the DVD won't play or freezes
The first thing to check for is fingerprints on the shiny side of the disc. Wipe it with a non-abrasive cloth or apply dishsoap and hot water. Another solution is to play it in a different device, if you have access to one. Computer DVD drives are often finicky - they will play some discs but not others. If it still won't play to the end, please report it when you drop it off, and you may have a free movie rental to make up for your inconvenience. If the problem is fixable, you may rent it later at no charge.

If you are having problems turning on subtitles, phone Irene 935-6712 while you've got the disc playing.
